It's that time of year for timeless tales, memorable rhymes and your favorite tall anthropomorphic cat in a red and white striped hat.
The University Village Bookstore is celebrating Dr. Seuss's birthday with its annual Cat in the Hat event Saturday, March 3, from 10 a.m to 12 p.m.
Faculty members from the Child Learning Resource Center and members from the Norfolk-based volunteer reading organization REACH (Reading Enriches All Children) will read to students at the bookstore and the University Theatre.
"Our success over the years with the Cat in the Hat event illustrates the magical power that Dr. Seuss characters have over kids," said Marc Katz, general book manager at the University Village Bookstore." It's the fun and excitement that brings crowds into our store from both the University and the local community."
The free event, which supports the national children's literacy initiative "Read Across America," usually attracts more than 300 students, parents and children.
Cupcakes, hats, balloons and face paintings will be offered. In addition to freebies, students will have a chance to take a picture with Cat in the Hat himself.
Free parking is available in Garage D, across from the side entrance of the Ted Constant Convocation Center on 45th Street. For more information, call the Village Bookstore at 757-423-2308.
