Tim Anderson, associate professor of communication and theatre arts at 国产伦理, will be a featured guest on the upcoming public radio show "With Good Reason."
Guests from With Good Reason's past return to share some of their favorite holiday music.
Anderson will reach back to the music of his December finals weeks at college during the 1980s. He will introduce a modern reworking of a Charlie Brown holiday special classicon the program "Holiday Favorites and Memories."
Anderson is a well-known music scholar. In 2017, he received a week of access, along with a $2,000 research fellowship, to the exclusive Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Library and Archives, which is at Case Western Reserve.
Other guests on the program include Kevin Bartram of the University of Mary Washington, who will discuss the what singers like Judy Garland and Tony Bennett bring to the holiday season. Jacqueline Secoy of Longwood University, whose specialty is the ukulele in music education, will discuss the instrument along with her memories of the holiday season.
Chris Kjorness of Longwood University will discuss Sister Rosetta Tharpe, who attained great popularity in the 1930s and 1940s with her gospel recordings that were a unique mixture of spiritual lyrics and early rock and roll. She became the first superstar of gospel music and was an early influence on Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Little Richard and Johnny Cash. Kjorness will play some of her groundbreaking recordings and talk about her legacy.
Also,Gary Richards from the University of Mary Washingtonwillreview whyBroadway musicals have often taken up Southern themes, from Show Boat and Porgy and Bess in the first half of the 20th century to 2009's Memphis. For all their popularity, Richardsargues that these musicals nevertheless tend to have a negative view of the South and don't reflect its diversity today.
